Irmo Council Seeks Name for New Park

The 14-acre park, located on Eastview Drive, will feature walking trails, a playground, amphitheater and picnic areas.

Irmo Town Council is looking for a name for the town's new 14-acre park located on Eastview Drive

Members briefly discussed naming the park — which will feature walking trails, a playground, amphitheater and picnic areas — at a regular meeting Tuesday night.

Councilwoman Kathy Condom suggested naming the new facility the Irmo Community Park.

The town is moving forward as quick as possible on the park, which some members of council hope will be finished for this year's Okra Strut Festival.

Recently, council approved a contract with Playgrounds of the Carolinas totaling $114,059 for playground equipment and installation, and a contract with LAD Corporation in the amount of $999,500 to construct the park.

Council is taking suggestions on a name for the facility that will serve as a home for future Okra Strut Festivals and other community events.

In other business, council unanimously approved a drainage easement across the town's Veterans Park.

Council members also discussed establishing a town fresh market on Saturdays near town hall.

Mayor Pro Tem Barry Walker Sr. said he was approached by several community members about the idea.

Walker said the market would be similar to the Soda City market held in downtown Columbia.

While there was no formal plan presented Tuesday night, Walker did suggest the market could be held Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon and vendors could be charged a fee as much $25 to participate.

A proposed location was on Carlisle Street near the Irmo Town Park.
