Irmo Council to Consider Salary Increase, Community Market

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Municipal Building, 7300 Woodrow Street.

Irmo Town Council members are scheduled to vote on first reading of an ordinance to increase town council members' salaries and a policy for a community market in Irmo at a regular meeting Tuesday night.

According to the agenda, council members could vote on first reading of an ordinance to increase council salaries by $1,800 a year per member effective Jan. 1, 2016.

Mayor Hardy King said he made the request to add the item to the agenda in order for council members to openly discuss the pay raise recommended by a study of town staff compensation.

King said the town also looked at salaries of local governing bodies in other areas of comparable size to help determine the figure.

Currently, King receives $550 per month and other council members receive $350 per month, he said.

Council hasn't received an increase in at least 20 years, King said.

Council members will also vote on a policy for a community market in Irmo.

The market could be located near the Irmo Town Park for local vendors to sell a variety of items including produce.

Mayor Pro Tem Barry Walker Sr. previously said the idea for the market came from several community members.

The proposed market would be held on Saturday mornings.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building, 7300 Woodrow Street.
