A brief summary of board actions and discussions at its regular meeting Monday night.

Here's a summary of some of the reports and actions taken at Monday night's Lexington-Richland 5 board meeting.

Superintendent's report

  • Members of each high school's technology committee discussed the importance of technology in the classroom and their support of the technology plan, which includes the purchase of iPads for high school teachers. The teachers said technology does enhance student learning.
  • Dr. Karl Fulmer, the district's chief financial services officer, briefly discussed the monthly financial reports.

  • The board voted 6-1 to approve a resolution authorizing the issuance and sale of general obligation bonds not to exceed $15 million. District officials say the sale of the bonds will be used for the district's capital projects budget. Board member Kim Murphy voted against the motion. 
  • The board voted 4 in favor of approving first reading of the 2012-2013 general fund budget. Board members Jan Hammond and Jim Turner abstained from voting. Murphy voted against the motion to approve first reading.

  • The naming committee for the district's new high school recommended naming the school Spring Hill High School. The board will vote on a name at a later meeting. 
  • Board member Beth Watson proposed a resolution requesting flexibility for state-funded instructional materials to allow for the purchase of e-books and other technology in addition to the standard textbooks.

School board spotlight

The board recognized the following students: 

  • Chapin High School's NJROTC program was recognized as Outstanding Unit in the Country. The Department of the Navy has ranked the Chapin High NJROTC program the best in North and South Carolina, and one of the top 10 programs in the nation, according to school officials.
  • Chapin High School's Boys Tennis Team and Coach John Rodgers for the team winning its third consecutive state championship. The team won 6-0 against Nations Ford High School. 
  • Superintendent's Writing Award: Lauren Henderson, Harbison West Elementary School; Abby Collins, Chapin Middle School
  • A representative of the Lexington County Sheriff's Department presented Hefner and Irmo High School's Skills USA group with a certificate of appreciation for donating water and snack foods to the Columbia Metropolitan Airport USO.
