Newsweek Names Chapin, Dutch Fork America's Best High Schools

Chapin ranked 751 out of 2,000 public high schools in the nation. Dutch Fork is ranked No. 979.

Chapin and Dutch Fork high schools in Lexington-Richland 5 are among America's Best High Schools, according to a rankings released Monday by Newsweek.

Chapin ranked 751 out of 2,000 public high schools in the nation. Dutch Fork is ranked No. 979.

South Carolina schools ranking higher than District 5 schools include Academic Magnet in North Charleston (No. 20), Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville (No. 59) and Charleston County School of the Arts in North Charleston (No. 588).

Other schools in the Midlands include Spring Valley High (No. 1185), A.C. Flora High (No. 1608) and Dreher High (No. 1792).

The ranking highlights the best public high schools that have "proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready graduates," according to the report.

The list is based on the following six components provided by school administrators:

  • Graduation rate (25 percent)
  • College matriculation rate (25 percent)
  • AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student (25 percent)
  • Average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent)
  • Average AP/IB/AICE scores (10 percent)
  • AP courses offered per student (5 percent)
