Photos: Irmo Farmers Market Draws Large Crowd Opening Day

Hundreds attended the first Saturday of the Irmo Farmers Market.

The gloomy weather didn't keep the crowd away from the opening day of Irmo's farmers market Saturday morning.

At least 25 vendors from local artisans and musicians to farmers and bakers lined the parking lot of Irmo Town Hall to kick off the town's first farmers market.

The market also featured kids yoga from Balance Your Yoga, a Boot Camp session from Irmo Elite Personal Training and music from ukulele and cello students from Musicians Supply.

Erin Cunningham of Irmo was one of many residents participating in the market's activities.

"I love it," Cunningham said.  "I think it's really neat. I really like it and the kids had a blast doing the kids yoga."

The market is a partnership between the Town of Irmo and the owners of a bi-weekly delivery service of fresh fruits and vegetables, Brown Box Veggies.

Heather Hardy, of Brown Box Veggies, said it was amazing to see how many people came out for the market even before it officially opened at 9 a.m.

Hardy said the market, which will be held on the first and third Saturdays of the month from May through October near the Irmo Town Park on Carlisle Street, is a good community service they wanted to bring to the town to showcase local South Carolina vendors.

"It was a passion of ours to bring the community together," Hardy said. "To bring the farmers and artisans together and give them a place to show (their products.)"

Tyler Proctor, another local resident, said he was delighted to see Irmo start the farmers market and hopes the market will be held weekly.

"It's way past time that Irmo has something like this," Proctor said. "This is awesome and I'm looking forward to seeing it thrive and grow."
