Update: Poll Workers: Low Turnout at Polls

Poll workers report low voter turnout this morning for the primary.

Update, 6:15 p.m.: Overall voter turnout was low in Tuesday's primary in Lexington County and even lower in some other areas, said Dean Crepes, director of the Lexington County Comission of Registration and Elections.

The court ordered county parties to disqualify candidates who didn't file a paper copy of their statment of economic interest form when they filed for candidacy. About 250 candidates statewide were kicked off the ballot.

Some candidates who were decertified at the last minute still appeared on the ballot. The election office put up signs at polling places telling voters their votes wouldn't count if they cast their ballot for those candidates. 

If voters did vote for those candidates, their vote for that specific race won't count, Crepes said, however, their votes for other races will count.

Original, 12:57 p.m.: Since 7 a.m. this morning, voters have turned out in low numbers at several precincts in the Irmo-Seven Oaks area to vote for the primary.

Patch visited several precincts in the area including Dutch Fork #1 and #2 (Dutch Fork High School and Dutch Fork Middle School), Irmo (Irmo Town Hall) and Seven Oaks (Irmo High School).

Poll workers reported low turnout during the morning hours. 

Around 11:45 a.m., only 14 out of 2,150 registered voters in the Dutch Fork #1 precinct had cast their ballots.

One area reported at least 42 ballots cast before noon.

No problems with machines or long lines were reported. 

Dean Crepes, director of the Lexington County Comission of Registration and Elections, said this morning there were no major problems reported.

"Everything is rolling as we planned," Crepes said.
