Muller Road Middle School Principal Sean Bishton has been selected to receive the South Carolina Music Educators Association’s (SCMEA) Honor Administrator Award. Annually, members of the music education community recognize a school administrator who has been a leader in supporting students' music development through funding, scheduling, and direct personal involvement in school music programs. Bishton was nominated by Michelle Ortiz, the band director at Muller Road Middle.
In her award nomination, Ortiz wrote, “Mr. Bishton believes in a communal approach where it really does ‘take a village’ to help students maximize their potential. He encourages faculty and staff to volunteer and assist with concerts just as he does with athletic events. Several teachers and administrative staff can be found at every concert supporting and encouraging the students: a direct correlation to the example he sets.” Bishton will receive the award at the SCMEA Annual Professional Development In-Service Conference on Friday, February 4, 2022 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Bishton began his educational career in South Africa as a sixth-grade teacher in 1990. Since moving to South Carolina, he has taught in Richland School District One and in Charleston County. He is in his seventh year as principal of Muller Road. He previously served in Richland Two as principal of Rice Creek Elementary and as an assistant principal at Round Top Elementary schools. Bishton earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Cape Town, a master’s degree in Instructional Accommodations from Francis Marion University, an Educational Specialist degree in leadership in education from Capella University, and National Board Certification in Early Childhood Mathematics.
