Richland County School District Two: TWO SCHOOLS ADVOCATING FOR THE WHOLE CHILD ARE AWARD FINALISTS

Sandlapper Elementary School and Ridge View High School are finalists for the ASCD Whole Child Award. The South Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development sponsors the award program which seeks to identify schools that have created a culture with programs that exemplify the five Whole Child tenets of Healthy, Safe, Engaged, Supported, and Challenged. Connie May is principal of Sandlapper Elementary School. “Sandlapper is dedicated to growing with our community, establishing a world-class school that embraces diversity and empowering student achievement through technology explorations and creativity to ensure lifelong success. We strive to prepare students in work, life, and citizenship by providing computer science skills, social and emotional support to become effective collaborators and communicators, computational and creative thinkers, and problem solvers with a global perspective,” said May. Dr. Brenda Mack-Foxworth is principal of Ridge View High School. “We are preparing students for tomorrow through teaching and learning goals centered on science, technology, engineering, arts, math, and medical collaboration and using AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) best teaching strategies in all classrooms. We provide students with the tools needed to excel in the Four A’s: Academics, Activities, Arts and Athletics. Sandlapper and Ridge View are two of three schools in South Carolina competing for the award. Each school will receive a site visit this month, then a winner will be announced. The winning school will receive recognition, three complimentary registrations for the South Carolina ASCD Fall Conference, and a $2,500 grant, given for the purpose of implementing other goals related to the tenets of The Whole Child Initiative.
