Road Closure Announced for Annual Dam Walk

The Battle on the Dam is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday on the Dreher Shoals Dam.

The Lexington County Sheriff's Department announced the following road closure for the the annual Battle on the Dam Walk scheduled for Saturday.

Below is the full release. 

Two travel lanes on S.C. 6 between the intersection with S.C. 60 and Old Bush River Road near Irmo and Corley Mill Road near Lexington temporarily will be closed to traffic between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 2 during the annual Battle on the Dam walk. Walkers will cross the Dreher Shoals Dam on the travel lanes that are adjacent to the Johnny W. Jeffcoat Walkway, walking from the Irmo side of the dam to the Lexington side of the dam.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said officers with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and state and municipal law enforcement agencies will direct traffic and provide motorists with directions for alternate routes during the walk. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to S.C. 6 for travel between Irmo and Lexington on Saturday morning.

School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties, the District 5 Foundation for Educational Excellence, the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission and The Community Roundtable conduct the Battle on the Dam in order to promote active lifestyles.

The two travel lanes on S.C. 6 beneath the dam that motorists use to travel from Lexington to Irmo will remain open to traffic during the walk, Metts said.
