SC Revenue Department Announces Safeguard for Filing State Tax Returns

A letter will be mailed to taxpayers asking them to provide additional information either online or by telephone in order to complete the return if forms are suspected of fraud.

A new security safeguard measure has been put in place to help prevent fraud when filing your state tax returns, the S.C. Department of Revenue announced Monday.

For questionable tax returns, DOR officials said a letter will be mailed to taxpayers asking them to provide additional information either online or by telephone in order to complete the return.

The agency has worked to put the measure in place after the personal information of 6.4 million taxpayers, dependents and businesses was compromised in a cyber attack of the Department of Revenue's database last year.

Officials said filing electronically continues to be a secure method and is more efficient than filing paper returns, according to a release.
