School News: Leaphart's Family Literacy Night
Leaphart Elementary held its annual Family Literacy Night, which included fun activities, games, reading and more.
Leaphart Elementary School faculty and staff, PTO members and more 150 Leaphart families came together to enjoy the school's annual Family Literacy Night on Nov. 27.
This year’s theme was “LEAP Loves Literacy”. Our goal was to spotlight nonfiction informational text. After enjoying a pizza dinner sponsored by the PTO, families participated in many different sessions planned by our teachers. Families made paper airplanes, Lego shelters, and family trees. We listened to math books and played math games, had written conversations, made postcards about Columbia landmarks and many other fun activities.

Several local celebrities and community members joined us. Len Keise, morning anchor from WIS; Miss Capital City, Taylor Bohn; and Miss Capital City Teen, Marley Stokes read to us. The Carolina Girls from USC read to us and then danced. The Irmo High School Hi-Steppers shared how the marching band show becomes a reality. The Irmo High Golf team showed families how reading isn’t always done within a book. Leaphart’s Literacy Night helped us all understand that we can find informational text in all kinds of places!
