Seven Oaks Elementary, CrossRoads Middle Win Good School-Keeping Awards

The schools were recognized by Lexington-Richland District 5 for their cleanliness and appearance.

Lexington-Richland School District Five has named Seven Oaks Elementary School and CrossRoads Middle School winners of its first “Good School-keeping Awards.”

The recognition was created to honor schools that excel in the maintenance, cleanliness and appearance of classrooms, school grounds and other facilities.

“We wanted a way to evaluate the maintenance of our schools, to build comradery and recognize the work and dedication of our custodial staff,” said Steve Kane, District Five Buyer and Warehouse Coordinator. “The maintenance and cleanliness of our schools are important to creating a good learning environment. And District Five takes pride in the fact that we do a great job with upkeep of our facilities.”

The awards were divided into two categories: elementary schools and middle/high schools. All District Five schools were rated based on an evaluation of several areas; including building entrances, restrooms, classrooms, administrative offices, and other spaces. Judges made two visits to each school, one announced and one unannounced.

Judges said while the overall appearances of all the schools were impressive, Seven Oaks and CrossRoads stood out.

At Seven Oaks, judges noted the pride the school took in cleanliness and a team effort in the upkeep of the facilities.

“This award recognizes our custodians as great caregivers for our facilities, children and staff. They truly are supporters of our school culture and climate in our building,” Seven Oaks Elementary Principal Ann Copelan said. “Our school is so appreciative of our custodians who give so much of themselves so that others have a clean place to work and learn.”

CrossRoads’ landscaping, much of it done by the facilities supervisor, caught the attention of judges visiting the middle school.

“CrossRoads Middle School is dedicated to providing its students with a dynamic educational experience and part of that effort involves maintaining a top-notch facility,” said CrossRoads Principal Jess Hutchinson.

District Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner said, “Our support staff is critical to the success of the district. The dedicated service they provide frees teachers and administrators to focus on instruction and student performance.”

The winning teams received banners that are now displayed at their schools.
