Speak Out: Should Schools Have Fewer But Longer School Days?

A bill approved by a House panel would allow school districts to change the instructional day.

A House bill that would allow school districts to change school hours was approved by a House panel to move on to the House Education Committee.

According to the bill, a school district would be able to decide "how best to structure the instructional day and how many days of instruction comprise the school year..."

"The number of instructional hours in an instructional day may vary according to local board policy and does not have to be uniform among schools in the district," the bill said.

The measure would give school districts the power to add hours to the school day in exchange for a shorter school year or to make up days students miss because of the weather or other disruption.

Those supporting the bill say the change would give schools more flexibility. Opponents said more instructional hours are needed
