Speak Out: Should the SC Lottery Be Privatized?
A proposed bill would allow the S.C. Lottery Commission solicit bids from private entities to organize and run the state's Education Lottery under the commission's supervision.

State Rep. Bakari Sellers, D-Bamberg, has proposed a bill that would allow the South Carolina Lottery Commission to solicit bids from private entities to assume the responsibility of organizing and conducting the S.C. Education Lottery.
The private entity would be under the supervision and control of the commission, the bill said.
The entity would be paid by the commission from funds it already receives. No new additional revenue would be allocated for this.

According to an ABC News 4 report, Sellers said
"We have the opportunity here to not only save millions of dollars and create a more effective and efficient lottery, but also to leverage private sector incentives that increase lottery revenues and give more of our students a shot at a college education," said Rep. Sellers.
