Three Councilmembers Face Off in Mayoral Race

Mayor John Gibbons will retire from the post after 20 years

The race for Irmo's next mayor will be one to watch as three town councilmembers face off for the position in November. 

Kathy Condom, Hardison King and Barry A. Walker Sr. have all filed to run for mayor. Suzanne C. Gooch, a local resident, has also joined the race.

Irmo Mayor John Gibbons is not seeking another term and will retire from the position after 20 years of service. Gibbons has decided to forgo another term as mayor to spend more time with his wife, three daughters and seven grandchildren.

Gibbons, who is one of the longest-serving Midlands' municipal leaders, said he will be downsizing by moving to his Lake Murray home.

The Nov. 8 election will also include two town council seats.

Incumbents Harvey Hoots and Sarah Watson, as well as Paul E. Younginer, have all filed for the two seats that are up since Hoots and Condom’s terms end Nov. 30. 

Both Walker and King have terms that last until 2013. 

The last day to file for the election was Sept. 9.
