Deadline! April 15 is here and it's time to pay those taxes.
But just in case you can't pay on-time, IRS.gov has provided a list of four helpful hints to lower the interest and the penalties.
- File on time and pay as much as you can. If you can't pay your entire tax bill, pay as much as you can to avoid late payment and interest charges on the full amount.
- Consider getting a loan or paying by credit card. The interest fees on your credit card may be lower than that charged by the IRS.
- Request a payment agreement. You can even do this online.
- Use the Online Payment Agreement tool at IRS.gov, or
- Complete and submit Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request, with your tax return. Find out about payment agreement user fees at IRS.gov or on Form 9465
- Don’t ignore a tax bill. If you get a bill from the IRS, call and talk to them about a payment arrangement.
If you don't want to complete your taxes on your own, check out the directory for a list of tax preparers.
