Doctor Charged in Irmo Pedestrian's Death Voluntarily Surrenders License

David Smith signed a temporary agreement to surrender his medical license after he allegedly hit and killed an Irmo man in January.

David Lee Smith, a doctor charged with felony DUI after he allegedly hit and killed an Irmo man in January, voluntarily surrendered his license to practice medicine.

Smith signed a temporary agreement of voluntary surrender on Jan. 16, according to the S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation. 

The voluntary surrender invalidates Smith's license to practice and be employed as a physician. The expiration date on Smith's license was June 30.

Smith, 46, was arrested by the Irmo Police Department after he ran off the road and struck and killed 39-year-old Raymond A. Geiger on Jan. 6.

According to an incident report, Smith told police he was swerving and "blacked out, like narcolepsy, and was trying to get home" when he hit Geiger who was walking along Lake Murray Boulevard.

Smith also told officers he had not been drinking.  A breath test showed a blood-alcohol level of zero percent, according to the report.

He was taken to Lexington Medical Center for drug testing, but the results of those tests have not been made public. 

Smith was released from the Lexington County Detention Center and is out on a $250,000 bond.

Smith worked as a doctor at Lexington Family Practice on Polo Road.
