Lexington County Man Charged with Tax Evasion

A Lexington County man is in jail after officials with the S.C. Department of Revenue say he failed to file taxes for two years and falsely claimed to be exempt from taxes for two other years.
Michael Marlowe, 41, was arrested Thursday morning by Department of Revenue officials and charged with two counts of failure to file income tax returns and two counts of income tax evasion.
Marlowe earned a gross income of $115,761 with a tax liability of $5,483 for tax years 2007 and 2008, according to a release from the Department of Revenue, but failed to file tax returns for those years.

During 2009 and 2010, Marlowe filed withholding certificates claiming to be exempt from taxes even though he earned $110,115 in income, according to the release. Marlowe failed to file tax returns for those years and evaded state income taxes of $5,467.
If convicted of all four charges, Marlowe could face up to 12 years in prison and/or be fined up to $40,000.
