Report: Man Accused of Stealing Scrap Metal Tried to Run from Deputies

A deputy had to shoot the man with a stun gun to stop him from running away.

A man who Lexington County deputies say was stealing scrap metal from a vacant house got shot with a stun gun when he tried to run away during his arrest, according to an incident report.

Scotty Sturkie, 37, is charged with third-degree burglary and petit larcency, according to the Lexington County Sheriff's Department. Two other people, William Tracy Cooper and William Shane Cooper, were also charged with third-degree burglary.

Deputies responded to a call around 11 a.m. Saturday about a burglary in progress at 253 Boiling Springs Road, according to an incident report. A neighbor saw three people loading items onto a long flatbed trailer attached to a black Dodge truck.

Sturkie and the other men had two sinks, a tub, wire, a water tank, a motor or compressor, an oil heater and a propane heater on the trailer, according to the report. Sturkie told the deputy the items came from William Shane Cooper's grandmother's house.

The deputy discovered that Sturkie was wanted out of Aiken County for grand larceny, according to the report. Sturkie said he was planning to turn himself in Monday.

When the deputy tried to arrest Sturkie, Sturkie pushed the deputy's hands away and started running, according to the report. The deputy used his Taser to stop Sturkie.

The owner of the vacant house said that the oil heater and propane heater belonged to him. Those items were returned to him.

Deputies towed the truck, trailer and remaining items to an evidence lot because they believed the items and the truck were involved in other incidents.
