Report: Men Stole Hard Drive From Walmart, Tried to Sell It at GameStop

Police say the two men took an Xbox hard drive from Walmart and tried to sell it at the GameStop down the street.

Lexington police arrested two Pelion men they say stole an Xbox 360 hard drive from Walmart in Lexington last week and then tried to sell it at GameStop.

Zachary Schmitt, 19, and Matthew Gonzales, 24, are each charged with shoplifting and trespass after notice. 

The men took an Xbox 360 hard drive from the Walmart at 5556 Sunset Boulevard and tried to sell it at the GameStop at 5454 Sunset Boulevard, according to a Lexington Police Department incident report.

Gonzales went to the electronics section of Walmart around 3 p.m. on May 16 and took an Xbox 360 hard drive off the locking hook, damaging the package, according to the report. When a Walmart employee came around the corner, Gonzales dropped the package on the bottom shelf. 

The Walmart employee said Gonzales then met with Schmitt, and Schmitt went to the electronics section and picked up the Xbox 360 hard drive, according to the report. He then went to the men's section, removed the device from its package and exited the store without paying.

Schmitt admitted to stealing the hard drive, according to the report. He said he needed money to visit his family in New Mexico. 

When a Lexington police officer ran a criminal history on Schmitt and Gonzales, he discovered Schmitt was wanted out of the Lexington Police Department for shoplifting - third or above and trespass after notice, according to the report.

The two men were arrested and booked at the Lexington County Detention Center.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Schmitt was being held on a $8,070 bond, and Gonzales was being held on a $2,600 bond.
