Town Plans To Replace Trees Cut Down on Main Street

The trees had to be chopped down to make way for a wider road.

Town council members say they'll make sure more trees are planted to replace the ones that were recently cut down on West Main Street.

Construction crews had to get rid of the trees to make room to widen the road as part of Phase I of the Unified Traffic Improvement Plan.

Crews cut down several trees across from Quality Inn and at Wells Fargo.

"Unfortunately, that's the price we are having to pay to improve the traffic in that area," said Mayor Pro-Tem Hazel Livingston. "It's sad, and it's hard to see them go but we will do everything we can to put them back."

The town plans to work with business owners to plant new trees once the construction in complete, Livingston said.

The lot at the corner of West Butler Street and Columbia Avenue where Riley's Drugs used to be will also be a green space in the future. Crews have already started installing pipes for an underground detention system on the lot.
