All-America Quilt in Mount Pleasant This Week
Quilt has a patch from each of 25 finalists for 2010 award.

The All-American City Quilt arrived in Mount Pleasant Monday and will be on display at varying locations for the rest of the week.
On a 25-city tour, the quilt contains a patch from each city that is either a finalist or was given “All-America” status, deemed by the National Civic League.
First stop on the national tour was in Chandler, Arizona. The quilt has visited 19 states since then and has two more cities to go before making its final stop in Middleton, Wisconsin.

“What a wonderful opportunity to allow the Town of Mount Pleasant to display this great work of Americana art,” said Mayor Billy Swails in a town news release. “Our delegation was proud to have delivered our square to the National Civic League during the All-America City competition last summer. Now to see it all come together is a great feeling.”
The National Civic League recognizes 10 communities each year for outstanding civic accomplishments. To win, each community must demonstrate innovation, inclusiveness, civic engagement and cross-sector collaboration by describing successful efforts to address pressing local challenges, according to the league’s website.

Mount Pleasant was named as a finalist for All-America city designation in 2010. Charleston was named All-America City from 1977 to 1978. The quilt features traditional quilting methods, patches or photos transferred onto fabric from all finalists.
“To me the quilt is a vibrant illustration of what is working in American communities,” said NCL President Gloria Rubio-Cortes, in a town press release.
