Nightime Roadwork on Mathis Ferry and Wingo Way Starts Tonight

Charleston County Government announces a traffic alert as part of continuing road work on the Johnnie Dodds Boulevard Improvements Project in Mount Pleasant.

Traffic will be shifted on Mathis Ferry Road between Johnnie Dodd Boulevard and Wingo Way. Details on the shift are:

  • Construction activity will occur from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily beginning Friday evening, Sept. 7, through Monday morning, Sept. 10.
  • Traffic on Mathis Ferry Road will be shifted to one side of the road, and Wingo Way will be closed from Mathis Ferry to Grands Avenue.
  • Signs will direct drivers to a detour on McGrath Darby Boulevard.
  • Drivers will still have access to hotels along Wingo Way.
  • The work is being conducted at night in an effort to reduce impact on drivers. The construction is necessary for crews to place asphalt on Mathis Ferry Road.
  • If the weather is poor any day during Sept. 7 – Sept. 9, the closure will continue until the work is completed.

Drivers traveling through the project’s construction zone are asked to be aware of equipment and crews working in the area at all times. The public is also asked to notice traffic control signs, reductions in speed limit and message board information.

Alternative routes are recommended if possible. The public is also asked to notice traffic control signs, reductions in speed limit and message board information, and to note that all road work is dependent on the weather.

The goal of the project, which is expected to be completed in the spring of 2013, is to improve the traffic flow in and out of Mount Pleasant, especially before and after school and work hours. The project is funded by the Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax and managed by Charleston County Government’s RoadWise Program, in close coordination with the Town of Mount Pleasant and the S.C. Department of Transportation.
