Body Found Behind Piggly Wiggly

UPDATE: Coroner says body is male

UPDATE (5:30 p.m.): Deputy Coroner Scott Ramsey reports that the body is that of a male, but that decomposition is so extensive, they can't be sure of the sex or any other identifying features.

This is an update. The original story from Friday evening is as follows:

Mount Pleasant police are looking into the discovery a dead body behind Piggly Wiggly on Riviera Drive.

Citizens walking through the woods around 4:30 p.m. Friday came upon the body and called authorities, said Mount Pleasant Police Lt. Blair Martin.

It was just too soon to speculate on how the person died, Martin said, but at first blush nothing pointed to foul play.

"Other than there being a body in the woods, nothing about it immediately presents itself as suspicious," Martin said. "The coroner is looking into it and they'll present their findings."

Charleston County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy and present the cause and manner of death.
