Charges Filed in Doctor's Death

Dr. Mitchell Hollon died while biking on the James Island Connector.

Charleston Police have charged a motorist with a single traffic violation in the death of well-known Mount Pleasant physician Dr. Mitchell Hollon.

Police spokesman Charles Francis said in a news release that Gregory Rupley, 44, has been charged with improper lane usage, a charge that will be adjudicated in City Traffic Court.

Rupley, who was behind the wheel of an AT&T van on the morning of July 5, reportedly crossed into the bike lane on the James Island Connector and struck Dr. Hollon, 54, who was an avid cyclist.

The crash sent the anesthesiologist over the edge of the bridge and into the marsh below. He was already dead when authorities reached him later. The entire ordeal is documented in graphic 911 audio recordings posted on the Post and Courier’s website.

Rupley is supposed to appear in court on Sept. 1 to answer to the traffic charge.
