Comcast Offers Cheap Internet for Struggling Families

Internet Essentials offers $9.95 Internet, $149 computers.

Comcast is offering reduced-price Internet and affordable computers to low-income families. 

The Internet Essentials program is meant to help students stay connected to homework and class projects with $9.95 per month Internet and a $149 computer.

Comcast estimates that only 45 percent of families with an income under $30,000 have broadband Internet at home.

To qualify, families must have one child enrolled in school who recieves free lunch subsidized by the federal government. They must live in an area serviced by Comcast. There is no requirement to purchase the low-price computer to participate, but it is offered at the time of enrollment.

There are other restrictions, like you can't currently be a Comcast customer, and you can't owe the cable provider money.

Comcast promises not to increase the price, and there is no equipment rental required.
