Detour on Johnnie Dodds Tonight

Bowman Road intersection closed at 9 p.m. tonight.

Charleston County Government plans a traffic detour as part of the Johnnie Dodds Boulevard Improvements Project in Mount Pleasant:

  • The detour will take place at night on Monday, Jan. 30, from 9 p.m. - 6 a.m.
  • Drivers will not be able to cross Johnnie Dodds Boulevard at the Bowman Road intersection, but will be detoured around the intersection.
  • The purpose of the detour is to allow crews to pour the concrete deck on top the Bowman Road overpass that is currently under construction.
  • Barricades and signs will be used to direct drivers through the detour.
  • Drivers choosing to use Johnnie Dodds Boulevard on the evening of Jan. 30 are encouraged to drive with extra caution.
  • If the weather is poor, the work will continue on the next weather-permitting night.

Drivers traveling through the project’s construction zone are asked to be aware of equipment and crews working in the area at all times. Alternative routes are recommended if possible. The public is also asked to notice traffic control signs, reductions in speed limit and message board information, and to note that all road work is dependent on the weather.

The goal of the project, which is expected to be completed in the spring of 2013, is to improve the traffic flow in and out of Mount Pleasant, especially before and after school and work hours. The project is funded by Charleston County’s Transportation Sales Tax Program in close coordination with the Town of Mount Pleasant and the S.C. Department of Transportation.
