UPDATE: Aircraft Thought to Have Crashed, Made Emergency Landing

Police said two people were aboard the plane, but neither were injured

The FAA is investigating after a small plane had to make an emergency landing in Mount Pleasant on Thursday afternoon.

The agency said the Piper PA 61 was thought to have crashed around 2 p.m., just four miles southwest of Mount Pleasant Regional Airport.

Mount Pleasant police said they arrived on scene at 2:06 p.m. near East Cooper Airport and discovered the plane had made an emergency landing in the marsh southwest of the airport near the Rivertown Subdivision, according to a press release. It is not known what caused the plane to have to land.

Police said the two occupants of the plane were found to be safe and uninjured and were transported by Charleston County Rescue Squad and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office from the scene.

The FAA is continuing to investigate.

According to the FAA, the aircraft is registered in North Carolina, but the registration for the current owner is in question.
