Fantasy Diverted to Avoid Emily

A handful of cruise ships scrambled to miss tropical storm

Passengers boarding Carnival Fantasy in Charleston joked Wednesday that they hoped the Holy City was still around when they returned from their five-night Caribbean cruise.

Little did they know that Carnival was scrambling to avoid Tropical Storm Emily, which was brewing south of Hispaniola. At first, the cruise was going to skip a stop in Freeport, Bahamas, according to USA Today.

But as the storm died out, passengers were told the Fantasy would just flip stops in Freeport and Nassau.

The stormed died out Thursday as it struggled with rugged mountain terrain in the Dominican Republic. Some paths showed it might come of the Charleston coast, but the treat wasn't ever serious.

Emily already disrupted several cruise ship itineraries this week, including two ... Carnival ships, as well as the world's largest cruise vessel, Royal Caribbean International's 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Seas, and Princess Cruises' only ship in the Caribbean.
