Half of Mount Pleasant Schools Miss AYP

Schools here still outperforming the county

Half of Mount Pleasant’s public schools have been deemed as not having met Adequate Yearly Progress, a federal benchmark determined mostly by standardized test scores.

Even if the report card sounds lackluster, consider that Mount Pleasant schools still far outrank county and state performance averages.

The 14 schools in Mount Pleasant showed progress in 99.9 percent of the categories set by the state to determine AYP. Across Charleston County Schools, 95.2 percent of the categories showed progress, as determined by the state. Across South Carolina, schools showed progress in 95.8 percent of categories.

Charleston county still struggles with graduation rates. In 2010, the latest year countywide data was available, Charleston County graduated 67 percent of students. The state faired better with 72 percent, and Wando High had an 81-percent graduation rate.

Four local schools – Charles Pinckney Elementary, Moultrie Middle, Thomas Cario Middle and Wando High – missed AYP solely because disabled students did not show progress this academic year, according to state AYP figures released on Friday.

That’s traditionally a trouble spot for schools, and for years educators have said that portion of the AYP criteria is unfair.
