Heat Nears Record Levels

National Weather Service sends warning as heat index approaches 115.

Baby, it’s hot out there. Temperatures in Mount Pleasant are peaking at 99 degrees today, according to the weather guys over at WCBD-TV.

But, like the old adage says, it’s not so much the heat, it’s that dang humidity that’s sending many folks scrambling for the nearest air conditioner.

With humidity reaching nearly 50 percent, it feels more like 112 degrees this afternoon, WCBD reports.

Across town, the heat is the only thing people can talk about.

“Every place I go in, someone says something about the heat when you come and then again when you leave,” said Larry Hill, who was pumping gas around noon today. “July is just the worst, so hopefully we’ll get through it.”

The National Weather Service in Charleston issued and excessive heat warning until 9 p.m. tonight. It predicted the heat index could touch 117 degrees. The situation could be harmful to your health, if you plan outdoor work or activities.

“The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely,” the weather service wrote in its heat advisory.

Today’s temperature is higher than the average, but it’s not yet a record, according to the weather service. Typically, today’s temperature should be 91 degrees, but the record was set at 101 in 1986.
