Local Aquathlon Star Sweeps Washington Race

Defending world champion Brent Demarest continues dominance.

A aquathlon star from the Lowcountry took top honors over the weekend at a Washington race against 200 competitors.

James Island 16-year-old Brent Demarest, who also swims for the Mount Pleasant Swim Club, finished with the fastest individual time of 56 minutes and 42.7 seconds. His closest competitor finished with a time of 57 minutes and 24.4 seconds.

USA Triathlon Aquathon National Championship was held at Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island, Wash. The national championship-distance race began with a 1,500-meter swim out and back in the East Channel of Lake Washington and a 10-kilometer circuit run.

In September 2011, Demarest, a Porter-Gaude School sophomore, was named world champion in the 2011 International Triathlon Union’s Aquathlon World Championships.
