"We are not launching this recreational recycling program because going green is a popular trend. We are doing it because it is the right thing to do," said Mayor Billy Swails in a news release. "The recycling efforts being put into place at our ballparks and recreational facilities will have an immediate positive impact."Â
The new program also serves to meet the 40-percent recycling goal adopted by Charleston County Council in 2009.Â

"This new initiative with the Town of Mount Pleasant is a win, win situation because it diverts recyclables from the County’s landfill, and helps Charleston County to reach Council’s 40 percent recycling goal," said Council member Schweers.Â
