New Owner for Old Hospital
Former East Cooper Medical Center purchased by Kindred Hospital Charleston.

The former location of has a new owner, and it means jobs and new life to at the old Mount Pleasant facility.
Late Tuesday, East Cooper announced it had formalized plans to sell the 125,000-square-foot facility to Kindred Healthcare, which plans to relocate from its present location in downtown Charleston.
Kindred Hospital Charleston will renovate the old East Cooper facility. When complete, it will house 59 long-term acute-care beds and 35 sub-acute-care beds by 2012.

“We’re excited to welcome our new neighbor, Kindred, to Mount Pleasant,” said Evan Ray, chief operating officer at East Cooper.
Kindred specializes in treating and rehabilitating patients with needs beyond the length of the typical acute care hospital stay.

“They are well-known for their high quality of care for long-term, acute hospital stays – and we are looking forward to strengthening our relationship with them,” Ray said.
The old hospital is located at the intersection of Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and Bowman Road.
“We look forward to moving to the Mount Pleasant area and expanding the services we can provide to more effectively meet the healthcare needs of our community,” said Jennifer Sheets, chief executive officer of Kindred Hospital Charleston.
East Cooper Medical Center left the old facility in April 2010, when it opened its new, five-floor, 250,000-squre foot hospital at 2000 Hospital Drive.
