Perry Leaves No Doubt

Texas Governor makes official entry into race in Charleston.

CHARLESTON — Texas Gov. Rick Perry came to South Carolina to announce he was a candidate for president, and before a crowd of 800 in Downtown Charleston, he left no doubt.

"It's time to get America working again," Perry said. "That's why, with the support of my family, and an unwavering belief in the goodness of America, I declare my candidacy for President of the United States."

Before an excited crowd at the annual RedState Gathering, Perry pumped the crowd. From Charleston, Perry heads to New Hampshire to kick-start a late start in a crowded race for the White House.

Despite a late arrival, and questions about whether he can compete in an already crowded field, there was enthusiasm for his announcement.

"He has a hope for America that's great," said South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in remarks before Perry’s announcement. "We've got great issues and great candidates, and that combination is magical because we have a president who has failed.”

Perry’s announcement apparently drew the largest crowd to the annual RedState gathering yet. Attendees from Texas, Indiana and Pennsylvania were present. Reporters from media outlets as far away at Japan covered the event.

“It gives an opportunity for south Carolina to shine a little more,” said Mike Murphee, chair of the Charleston Tea Party. “Not everything happens in Iowa.”
