Sheriff Admits to Slapping Suspect

Sheriff Al Canon says behavior wasn't appropriate.

Charlelston County Sheriff Al Cannon said Wednesday that in anger, after a high-seed chase that reached 100 mph at times, he slapped a handcuffed suspect with an open hand, according to a WCDB-TV story.

"Pnce McManus was handcuffed and in backseat of car, I slapped him and said 'What the (blank) is wrong with you?,'" the Sheriff told the TV station.

Cannon is referring to a chase that began in Mount Pleasant on Monday when Cannon was headed into work. It in the Francis Marion National Forest when Cannon shot out the suspect's tire.

The Sheriff said the behavior was innapropriate and that he has been cooperating with a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigation.
