Wando Product Achieves All-American Status Despite Loss in Nationals

Wando High graduate Trent Williams went from walk-on to All-American wrestler in just one season at Spartanburg Methodist College.

Wando High School graduate Trent Williams walks away an All-American despite a loss in the NJCAA national wrestling championships Saturday in Rochester, Minn.

Williams, a non-scholarship wrestler for Spartanburg Methodist College, lost 8-2 Saturday in a quarterfinals match to Bryce Lewis of Colby Community College. It would be his second loss to Lewis, who was ranked No. 11, in the competition.

Williams, who is a freshman walk-on who never even made the state finals in high school, was seeded No. 19 in the 165-pound weight class, according to the NJCAA website.

Earlier in the competition, Williams beat No. 12 W.V. Meyer of North Idaho College, 16-3; No. 4 seed Darnell Thomas of Lincoln College, 10-6.

Williams' performance has earned him a scholarship next year at Spartanburg Methodist College.
