This arts-centric downtown area is now officially home to SC's 13th cultural district (postandcourier.com) — Downtown Summerville has officially been named South Carolina’s 13th cultural district, covering four arts-filled blocks along South Main Street. The area features galleries, studios, monthly street festivals, free public concerts, and community theater, all aimed at boosting local artists and strengthening the town’s cultural identity and economy.
   

2. Summerville considers annexing 700+ acres for residential development (live5news.com) — Summerville officials are weighing a proposal to annex more than 700 rural acres in Berkeley County, paving the way for over 1,200 new homes and mixed-use development. Supporters say it will guide growth and improve services, while nearby residents worry about traffic, safety, and losing the area’s rural feel. A second public hearing is set for January 15.
   

3. Dorchester County deputy awarded South Carolina's highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto (counton2.com) — Summerville readers may recognize Chief Deputy Bruce Owens, who once led the Summerville Police Department and has now received South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto. The longtime Dorchester County lawman was celebrated for more than five decades of military and law enforcement service, including key roles with North Charleston Police and the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office.
   

4. Charleston Police spread holiday cheer with 7th annual Santa's Escort Ride (counton2.com) — Summerville officers joined Charleston Police and other Lowcountry agencies for the 7th annual Santa’s Escort Ride, delivering books and toys to children in need. The motorcade visited Charleston schools plus the Ronald McDonald House and Fisher House, spreading holiday cheer while honoring the late Chief Luther Reynolds’ community-focused tradition.
   

5. Hundreds quarantined in Upstate measles outbreak (charlestoncitypaper.com) — State health officials report a rapidly growing measles outbreak centered in Spartanburg County, with more than 250 people quarantined and most cases among the unvaccinated. Buried in the broader statewide headlines is a bright spot for Summerville: the town has just been named South Carolina’s 13th official cultural district, highlighting its arts and cultural scene for residents and visitors alike.
