• Built in the 1920s, is Gervais Street bridge wide enough by today's standards? (thestate.com) — If you regularly cross the Gervais Street Bridge between West Columbia and downtown Columbia, those tight lanes you feel are indeed narrower than modern standards recommend. Built in 1928 and now a protected historic structure, the bridge carries nearly 27,000 vehicles daily, and while its lanes and railings wouldn’t meet today’s design guidelines, state officials say there are no current plans to change its four-lane configuration.
