South Dakota has a storied tradition of military service, with countless individuals dedicating their lives to protecting our nation. While words can't fully capture the immense gratitude we feel for our servicemen and women, Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to highlight a few remarkable veterans and active-duty military members from our state.

Please describe the individual’s military service.
He was 16 when he joined WW2, he joined the United States merchant marines because of his age. He served on the Atlantic and Pacific. During this time he was on 3 ships that were sunk and spent 19 hours in a lifeboat. He was wounded once. He retired as an ensign.
Tell us about the military hero and what your community should know about them.
After the war he met my mother they moved to Wheaton Illinois and opened their first restaurant the willow snack in Wheaton. He then sold it and bought the Dinner Pail in villa park Illinois. Then he bought the chuck wagon and managed the Montana steak house in villa Park. Over time he sold all the restaurants and started a home maintenance company. In the early’90’s he and his wife moved to pine ridge Rez to do missionary service. They fell in love with the people and the land. Both are buried on the Rez
