Tennessee is home to dedicated first responders who go above and beyond to keep their communities safe. That’s why Patch and T-Mobile have teamed up to spotlight EMTs, firefighters and police officers who are making a difference every day.

Officer Seth Blaine (Knoxville) — Officer Seth Blaine of the Knoxville Police Department was named 2024 Officer of the Year for his swift response in a life-threatening emergency. Blaine provided critical medical aid to a man whose arm had been run over by a vehicle, an act that likely saved the victim’s life. In addition to his lifesaving actions, Blaine made more than 300 arrests throughout the year, showcasing his commitment to public safety. His composure and dedication earned him top honors from the department. Read more here.

Officer Sharrell Dykes (Johnson City) — In December 2024, Officer Sharrell Dykes received the Johnson City Police Department’s Medal of Distinguished Service for his heroic response during Hurricane Helene. When flooding trapped eight deputies and a K9 in the Embreeville area, Dykes retrieved a 5-ton military vehicle and navigated through dangerous, impassable roads to bring them to safety. His actions put him directly in harm’s way, yet he remained calm and focused throughout the high-risk mission. Dykes’ bravery and selflessness reflect the very best of public service. Sergeant Cody Manders (Monroe County) — Sergeant Cody Manders of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was recently honored by the Tennessee House of Representatives for his bravery during a shooting at the Monroe County Justice Center. In August 2024, Manders confronted an active shooter and helped evacuate civilians, putting his life on the line to protect others. His courage and quick thinking were credited with saving lives during the terrifying incident. Read more here.

Captain Christopher Patterson (Knoxville) — In September 2024, retired Captain Christopher Patterson of the Knoxville Fire Department was recognized with the Tennessee Three Stars Award. Patterson sustained career-ending injuries while rescuing a woman from a fire in December 2022. Despite the personal cost, Patterson’s actions saved a life and demonstrated extraordinary heroism. Honored alongside Governor Bill Lee, Patterson’s service was celebrated at a statewide ceremony for his sacrifice and bravery. Read more here.


EMT Billy Prescott (Crockett County) — Billy Prescott was named Tennessee EMT of the Year in 2025, capping off 35 years of dedicated service with the Crockett County Ambulance Service. Known for his compassion, skill and unwavering commitment, Prescott has become a hometown hero whose work has saved countless lives. His recognition highlights the critical role EMTs play in the community and the lasting impact of his career. Read more here.
