Nashville Sailor Killed In Africa: Navy

Nashville native Petty Officer Matthew Holzemer died in a "non-combat" incident in Djibouti, the Pentagon announced Tuesday.

WASHINGTON, TN – A United States Navy Sailor originally from Nashville died in Africa June 17, the Pentagon announced Tuesday.

The Department of Defense said Petty Officer First Class Matthew I. Holzemer died at Camp Lemonnier in the East African nation of Djibouti after a "non-combat related incident."

Holzemer was deployed in support of Special Operations Command operations in East Africa. He is the son of former Metro Assistant EMS Chief Jim Holzemer.

The Pentagon said Holzemer's death is under investigation but offered no other details.

Camp Lemonnier is the only permanent United States military base in Africa, originally established to support the elements of Operation Enduring Freedom in the Horn of Africa. It is now the headquarters for American and coalition forces operating in the region.
