Wannabe South Nashville Thief Learns Safes Are Heavy

Police are searching for a man who tried to steal a safe from a Trousdale Drive business, apparently unaware of how much safes weigh.

NASHVILLE, TN β€” Safes, designed as they are to protect valuables from the dastardly and sticky-fingered, are hefty objects. This seemingly obvious observation was apparently lost on a wannabe thief in South Nashville.

Around 11:30 Wednesday night, a man broke into Power Rental and Sales on Trousdale Drive. Surveillance footage shows him prying open a back door and heading for the business's safe.

Though he had enough upper-body strength to crowbar the door open, his biceps and triceps failed him as he tried to carry the safe, which was, it would appear, heavier than he thought. Maybe he should have tried lifting with his legs. He attempted to roll the safe end-over-end, but tired out or questioned the efficiency of the somersault method once he got outside.

The man dropped the safe and then tried to hoist it into a rolling office chair, which he looked to use as a sort of improvised loader. The business, for what it's worth, rents numerous forklifts, front loaders, skid jacks and the like. The chair snagged on something and the safe went tumbling.

Eventually, the clearly-didn't-think-this-through thief abandoned his plan and in the end, nothing was stolen.
