📰 News we're reading

1. Trends emerge from state school report card across Southeast Tennessee (wdef.com) — New state report card data shows seven Hamilton County schools, including several in Chattanooga, received F grades, all serving mostly economically disadvantaged students. At the same time, 13 Hamilton County schools earned A’s, highlighting a sharp performance gap that education advocates say reflects both accountability and the impact of intensive work by teachers and students.

2. Cutting Orange Grove recycling contract leaves disabled employees without work (timesfreepress.com) — Chattanooga’s decision not to automatically renew its recycling-center contract with Orange Grove Center could leave 26 disabled workers without jobs at the start of the new year. The city will instead open the work to competitive bidding while temporarily staffing centers itself, and Orange Grove plans to compete but is scrambling to find other placements for its clients.

3. Council Fire Members Purchasing Ownership From Kinsey (chattanoogan.com) — Council Fire Club in East Brainerd is shifting from developer Jon Kinsey’s ownership to its own members, a move that’s drawing major attention in Chattanooga’s golf community. Members are buying equity shares, forming a new board, and keeping the current management team as the club plans course updates, including a new 18th hole expected in 2026.

4. Drunk man shuts down club, spits at Police in Chattanooga early Saturday (newschannel9.com) — Chattanooga police say a nightclub on Honest Street had to temporarily close early Saturday after a highly intoxicated man allegedly punched multiple people and later spat at officers. The man, initially booked as John Doe, now faces several charges, while at least one injured victim is pressing charges over the bloody confrontation outside the club.
