Tennessee Officer Shoots, Kills Man After Pursuit: Police

A man was killed when he pointed a gun at a police officer after a car chase in Bluff City on Thursday morning, police say.

BLUFF CITY, TN — An officer from the Bristol Police Department shot and killed a man following a car chase in Bluff City on Thursday morning, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

A deputy from the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office attempted to pull the man over when the deputy noticed him driving erratically near East Sullivan High School, but the man fired shots out his window and led authorities on a car chase, police said.

The man encountered the Bristol Police Department officer at the intersection of White Top Road and Highway 394, shooting at him several times. The Bristol officer followed the man to the 200 block of Elm Street, where the man got out of the car and went behind a house. The officer confronted the man, who pointed a gun at the officer. The officer then fired at the man, killing him, according to authorities.

The car chase lasted around 5 miles and ended when the man sustained damaged to his car, police said.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is the lead agency in the case and will report its findings to the District Attorney General.
