Knoxville is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Knoxville has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Knoxville was once the capital of the state of Tennessee. In 1796, when Tennessee was admitted to the Union, Knoxville was named the state capital, a title it held until 1817 when it was moved to Murfreesboro and later to Nashville. Knoxville still retains much of its historical charm with preserved buildings and landmarks from its early days.
- Knoxville is home to the Knoxville Museum of Art, which is free to the public. The museum has a collection of more than 1,500 works of art, including paintings, sculptures and photographs. Visitors can also attend special events and exhibitions throughout the year, making it a great destination for art lovers.
- The Market Square in downtown Knoxville is a popular gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. The square is surrounded by restaurants, shops and cafes, and hosts numerous events throughout the year, including concerts, festivals and farmers' markets. It's a great place to people-watch, grab a bite to eat or just soak up the city's vibrant energy.
- Knoxville has a rich musical heritage, and the city is home to many live music venues that host various acts. The Bijou Theatre is one of the city's most iconic venues and has hosted everyone from The Ramones to Dolly Parton. Other popular spots for live music include The Mill & Mine and The Concourse.
- Knoxville is known for its delicious barbecue, with many local restaurants serving up mouthwatering dishes. One popular spot is Sweet P's Barbecue & Soul House, which has been featured on the Food Network. Other local favorites include Dead End BBQ, Full Service BBQ and Archer's BBQ.
