Government Office Closings For The 2017 Thanksgiving Holidays

Most Knoxville and Knox County offices will be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

KNOXVILLE, TN – City of Knoxville and Knox County government offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Other government services are opened or closed on a variety of schedules. The longest time off goes to Knox County Schools and Pellissippi State Community College, which are both closed Wednesday through Friday.

In comparison to the K-12 schools and Pellissippi, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville is Spartan by being closed only two days–Thursday and Friday. The Knox County Library system is closed Thursday and Friday, but will reopen for regularly hours on Saturday.

Knox County Solid Waste Convenience Centers will be closed Thanksgiving Day, but open regular hours Friday and Saturday. Waste Connections, the city’s contractor for household garbage and recycling collection, will be closed Thursday in observation of the Thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving is one of only two holidays throughout the year—the other being Christmas Day—that city garbage collection is closed. While no household garbage or recycling collection will take place on Thursday’s holiday, the collection routes will resume on Friday with the regular route schedules one day behind. Therefore, households where garbage is regularly collected on Thursdays will be collected on Friday, and Friday’s regular schedule will be run on Saturday. As usual, City residents are advised to have all garbage and recycling containers out for collection by 7 a.m. on the day of collection, regardless of anticipated holiday schedule changes. Downtown garbage and recycling will run regular schedules through the week of Thanksgiving. While city recycling centers will be open, Goodwill attendants will not be available for assistance or to accept donations on Thursday. Furthermore, the city’s Solid Waste Management Facility at 1033 Elm St. will be closed Thursday through Saturday. Regular operating hours and collection schedules for all city waste services will resume on Monday, Nov. 27.
