The national Veterans of Foreign Wars #StillServing campaign recognizes veterans who continue to serve in their community after the military

Oneida veteran Fred Huppert is being honored for dedication to country and community in the VFW #StillServing campaign. The national Veterans of Foreign Wars #StillServing campaign recognizes veterans who continue to serve in their community after the military.
Since retiring from the U.S. Navy, Huppert has continued to serve his community as a trail minder for the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area, distributing food at the Gerry McDonald Mission House and organizing and participating in roadside trash pickups. In addition, he educates local youth about aviation to spur interest in the subject and helps needy families in the surrounding area through service projects at his church
Huppert feels blessed to have been born in a country with so many opportunities to succeed and feels obligated to pay it forward, saying he plans on spending the rest of his life serving the communities where he lives.

According to the 2021 Veterans Civic Health Index, veterans average nearly 30 percent more volunteer hours per year and outpace civilians 15 percent in charitable donations. Additionally, nearly 40 percent more veterans belong to a group working on community issues and veterans are more like to be registered to vote (7 percent) and have recently voted (6 percent).
