A local senior was recently recognized for his courage and dedication to the country. Concord Place, an Anthem Memory Care community in Knoxville, honored resident Ed Fulgum on National Purple Heart Day for his bravery in the Army.

Driven by a sense of duty, Fulgum enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 18. For 32 years, his military journey led him across continents and battlefields, rising to the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He completed tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam earning him three Purple Hearts, a legion of Merit, three bronze stars and a silver star.

“The military was a significant time for our elders and one in which they take pride. Although they may not recall the details of how they helped this country, it’s important to remember their patriotism and sacrifice,” said Lorie Warren, life engagement director of Concord Place. “We wanted to recognize Mr. Fulgum for being a true inspiration to all generations. This is a great reminder that heroes walk among us.”
