According to police, Brooks then ran away after the shooting, which investigators believe was a domestic violence situation, and carjacked two men in a gold Impala on 10th Avenue North. Brooks shot Payne, who was driving, and his passenger, 52-year-old Patrick Hancock. Hancock was shot and pistol-whipped and taken to the hospital.

Shortly thereafter, police found the Impala turned sideways on Interstate 40 near 51st Avenue and followed footprints in the snow that led them to Brooks, who was arrested on the scene.
